Victor Osimhen rose at the back post in the 91st minute to head home a dramatic winner as the Super Eagles came from behind to defeat South Africa's Bafana Bafana 2-1 in a World Cup qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo on Tuesday night.

The visitors had stunned a sold-out crowd in the 23rd minute when Lyle Foster latched onto a defensive miscue to slot past goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

Ademola Lookman equalised on the hour mark with a curling left-foot strike before Osimhen's late intervention sent the Akwa Ibom faithful into delirium.

Group Standings

The win lifts Nigeria above South Africa to the top of Group C with 13 points from six matches. Head coach Eric Chelle described the performance as "a statement of intent."

"We showed character today," Chelle said. "The boys never gave up and the supporters were our 12th man."

The Eagles next travel to Kigali to face Rwanda on Sunday before hosting Lesotho in the final round of qualifying matches in March.
