Governor Dapo Abiodun has emerged as the winner of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for the Ogun East Senatorial District, securing an overwhelming victory against former Ogun State governor and serving senator, Otunba Gbenga Daniel.
Results announced by the Chief Returning Officer for Ogun East Senatorial District, Dr Wale Bello, showed that Abiodun polled 75,550 votes to defeat Daniel, who secured 398 votes, while another aspirant, Bukola Braimoh, received 29 votes.
The primary election, conducted across the nine local government areas within Ogun East Senatorial District, recorded a total of 99,503 votes cast according to figures released by the electoral committee.
Abiodun recorded commanding victories across all local governments in the senatorial district, including areas considered politically influential within Ogun East. In Sagamu Local Government Area, the governor secured 8,434 votes, while Gbenga Daniel failed to record a single vote. Bukola Braimoh polled seven votes in the council area, which reportedly has over 11,000 registered APC members.
In Ikenne Local Government, Abiodun also dominated the exercise with 8,226 votes, while both Daniel and Braimoh failed to secure any vote. Similar results were recorded in several other local government areas where the governor maintained a wide lead.
The breakdown released by the committee indicated that Abiodun secured 13,469 votes in Ijebu North, 10,942 votes in Ijebu-Ode, 7,989 votes in Odogbolu, and 7,058 votes in Ijebu East. In Ogun Waterside, he polled 6,958 votes, while he recorded 7,034 votes in Remo North and 5,655 votes in Ijebu North East.
Otunba Gbenga Daniel, who currently represents Ogun East in the Senate and previously served as governor of Ogun State between 2003 and 2011, managed to secure votes mainly in Odogbolu and Ijebu East, where he polled 219 and 139 votes respectively. Political observers described the outcome as one of the biggest upsets within the Ogun APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The primary election has further reinforced Governor Abiodun’s growing influence within the Ogun APC structure, particularly in Ogun East Senatorial District, which has traditionally been regarded as a stronghold of Gbenga Daniel. Analysts say the result may significantly reshape political alignments within the ruling party in Ogun State ahead of the next election cycle.
Although neither Abiodun nor Daniel had officially reacted to the outcome as of the time of filing this report, party leaders in the state described the exercise as peaceful and transparent. APC officials also urged party members to remain united and work collectively towards securing victory for the party in the forthcoming elections.
The Ogun East Senatorial primary is considered one of the most closely watched contests in Ogun politics due to the political stature of both Abiodun and Daniel, who remain two of the most influential figures within the state’s political landscape.
The APC primaries across Ogun State are part of the party’s broader preparations for the 2027 National Assembly elections, with candidates now expected to begin consultations and mobilisation ahead of the general polls.
