If you ranked the iPhone releases of the last five years by sheer novelty, the iPhone 17 Pro would not crack the top three. The hardware looks almost identical to last year's model. The chassis is the same titanium. The Dynamic Island is unchanged. iOS 19 is a polish update.
And yet — after two weeks with the device — I would argue this is the most consequential iPhone Apple has shipped since the original Pro line.
The Surprise
It's the camera. Specifically, the new variable-aperture main sensor and on-device neural rendering pipeline that completely re-think how the phone handles low-light scenes. Indoor restaurant shots — the bane of every smartphone ever made — finally look like they were taken with intent.
Verdict
If you have a 15 Pro, skip. If you have a 14 Pro or older and care about photography, upgrade. Battery life is also meaningfully better — I averaged 9h 40m of screen-on time during the review period.
